PLANNING APPLICATION SUBMITTED FOR ALMA ROAD HOUSING DEVELOPMENT
Nene Housing has submitted a planning application to provide new housing on a derelict site at Alma Road, Millfield. An application for a new health care facility on the site will be also be submitted shortly.
The seven-acre site will be redeveloped to provide 79 homes which will include homes for affordable rent, private sale and properties available under the Homebuy initiative. Homebuy enables residents to buy a share in a property (typically 50 per cent) and rent the remainder from Nene. The scheme helps first time buyers, key workers and people priced out of the current housing market to get a foot on the property ladder.
The housing will comprise properties with between two and five bedrooms and also two-bedroom flats. A significant proportion of the site will remain as public open space, some of which will be landscaped while some will be designed as hard ball areas for activities such as basketball.
A new health centre to be operated by the Peterborough Primary Care Trust will also be built on the site. It will serve the needs of the new community as well as existing residents in the surrounding area.
A £5.3 million Extra Care Housing Scheme, which will be operated by Axiom Housing Association, will also be built at Alma Road. The development will comprise 35 flats for rent and five for shared ownership and will include a range of communal facilities.
“The mixed-use scheme will be built to high standards and will be created to serve the needs of both new and existing residents,” said Adam Broadway, development director at Nene.
“The site, previously a sports ground owned by Perkins Engines, has been derelict for a number of years. The new development will not only provide housing but also recreation facilities which can be used by the wider community. Our leadership and experience will enable us to recreate a fantastic new community with a range of well designed open space and facilities for all.”
A decision is expected to be made on the planning application by late summer. If approved, construction will begin at the end of the summer.
